MEET SAMANTHA - THE HANDS BEHIND THE MAKING

Rooted in craft.

A rebel at heart.

I’m Samantha—a mom of four, a maker, and someone who’s always wanted to figure out how things work.

Roots & Rebel grew from that curiosity: a childhood of making do, a willingness to learn, and the wish to make something useful for the people I care about.

CURIOSITY CAME FIRST

01 /

Making do became making things.

If you trace my story back, it starts with tagging along to my mom’s college classes on sick days and a childhood spent figuring things out with whatever was in front of me.

Being home sick from elementary school a lot meant finding ways to pass the time. For me, that meant mud pies, an early start in the kitchen, and watching craft shows on TV.

Eventually, I was whittling my own little crochet hooks and using toothpicks and grill skewers as makeshift tools to teach myself to knit and crochet. If I wanted to try something, I found a way to start.

A PRACTICAL EDUCATION

A sewing machine. Some marine vinyl.
A willingness to learn.

Years later, that practical streak led me into a boat seat upholstery business with my brother. We bought a heavy-duty sewing machine and got to work redoing marine vinyl.

That’s where I learned the ins and outs of heavy-duty sewing. Those skills stayed with me as I branched out into other projects: different fabrics, different ideas, and more ways to make something both useful and personal.

PUTTING DOWN BOTANICAL ROOTS

03 /

Care brought me to the garden.

I’m also a tired mom of four kids who seemingly bring home every bug under the sun. My own experiences and my family’s health challenges made me more curious about ingredients and the choices we make at home.

Gardening and growing kitchen herbs led me into learning about plants, food, and botanical preparations. What began with practical questions became a deep interest in researching ingredients and understanding their differences.

That curiosity follows me into the kitchen and the worktable - whether I’m making a face scrub, preparing calendula-infused topical products, sourcing local honey, or exploring herbal tea blends.

The sewing, the botanicals, the sweet little experiments: they all come from the same place. I like learning how something works, making it with care, and giving it a little character along the way.
